West Hills Mall opens in 2014In October next year, Ghana will be home to a US$93million shopping mall which would occupy an area of 27,000 square meters, and house some 67 local and international retail outlets.

The West Hills Mall, currently under construction by South-African real estate contractors, WHMO, at Dunkonah near Weija in Accra, is jointly owned by Delico Property Development Limited with 60% shares and Ghana?s Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) with 40% shares.

Delico Properties Development Limited is the turn-key developer of the project.

Chairman of West Hills Mall, Kofi Sekyere, told journalists the mall is the biggest in West Africa, adding that the initial size of West Hills Mall is 27,000 square meters, but would be increased to 40,000 square meters over time.

He said the project currently employs five sub-contractors in Ghana and one from outside Ghana, with over 300 workers on site so far.

?We expect that by the completion of the project we would have provided jobs for 1,000 Ghanaians,? he said.

Mr. Sekyere said when completed, the mall would have two anchor tenants? Shoprite and Palace supermarkets?plus 65 line shops from Ghana and around the world.

He said lessons have been learnt from Accra Mall regarding the vehicular traffic jam around the area, adding that measures have been put in place to avoid that problem at West Hills Mall.

?We have a specially designed interchange near the mall to ensure smooth vehicular traffic flow and we have also designed a pedestrian underpass for persons entering the mall on foot so they will not compete with vehicles,? he said.

Mr. Sekyere said the choice of Accra West for this ?luxurious? project was based on research which revealed that the hitherto huge difference in wealth between Accra East and West dwindled largely so there is a clear sign that the future lies in the west.

Project architect, Auguistus Richardson, summed up the grandeur and shopping convenience which West Hills Mall will usher into the local retail sector when he declared at the end of his presentation to the media that ?Abrokyir aba fie? (Fante, literally meaning ?The nice things in Europe are now available at home in Ghana?).

?Conceptually, the West Hills Mall is a beautiful lady. The Facade of Mall is designed to sit well with the rolling Hills of Aplaku and Bortianor in the background to accentuate the beautiful curves of our Lady. We have introduced a lot of tree cover to soften the hard-landscaped areas?, Richardson said.

West Hills Mall Chairman, Kofi Sekyere and Managing Director of Atterbury, James  Ehlers jointly unveiled the architectural designs of the Mall at a Facility Visit which attracted some 25 journalists.

?When West Hills Mall opens next year, it will be Ghana?s ultimate family shopping destination, offering two supermarkets as the major anchor tenants, 65 line shops, a long chain of restaurants and five screen cinema complexes. The Mall?s tenants are a mix of both international and local brands and will offer the public a wide array and variety of services and product choices,? said Board Chairman Sekyere.
