Greece’s civil servants held a one-day strike over job cuts Tuesday, forcing ministries and tax offices to remain closed and hospitals to operate with emergency staff only.

The walkout also caused widespread disruption to Athens’ public transport system.

Several hundreds demonstrators, some of them yelling anti-government slogans, protested peacefully in front of the Finance Ministry in central Athens, while an estimated 3,000 people took to the streets in the northern port city of Thessaloniki.

The government wants to scale down the civil service to reduce costs. Trade unions say this will lead to more unemployment, whose rate currently stands at 27 per cent.
