As the world celebrated the annual but symbolic UN sanctioned International Day of the Girl Child [IDGC], Africa’s girl child education advocate & award winning documentary film maker – Zuriel Oduwole, saw an opportunity to talk “Hand Hygiene” with school children, while visiting Africa’s most populous country – Nigeria. In 2013, she had spent the IDGC in Tanzania visiting several schools at the invitation of H.E President Jakaya Kikwete, who saw Zuriel as an inspiration to other girls in Tanzania, and as an embodiment of what education can do in a Girls life.

With President Kikwete of Tanzania (1)Speaking in her first stop of several schools in Nigeria this week, the Girls Education advocate spoke passionately to the children about the need to maintain basic hand hygiene, as the first step in reducing the incidence of diseases transmitted through contact with bacteria and some viruses.

She encouraged the children to wash their hands with soap and warm water every 2 to 4 hours in the absence of which she urged them to use ‘hand sanitizers. The highlight of each visit and to the delight of the children was the distribution of specially made clip-on hand sanitizers, which the children readily hooked onto their backpacks. Made in bright laced colors to appeal to children, and with colorful matching hooks, they were the result of Zuriels efforts to educate Africa’s children about the need to stay healthy, if they were going to get a good education in the first place.

With the help of product sponsors, assist from an airline and what was left of her and her two younger sisters savings, they were able to ship the sanitizers to Nigeria, in time for the IDGC.
