Zambia to establish 1st ethanol plant

The Zambian government has allowed a Britain-based firm to set up the first ethanol plant in the country, local newspaper reported on Monday.
The Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) has given Sun-bird Bio- Energy Africa a license to set up the ethanol plant in northern Zambia’s Kawambwa district.
The firm is expected to invest 150 million U.S. dollars in the production of ethanol with a target to produce 120 million liters of fuel annually, Ronald Chitotela, a lawmaker in the district, was quoted as saying by the paper.
The lawmaker said the project could be launched before the end of this year.
Zambia, which depends on petroleum as its main source of energy, is prone to frequent shortages of the commodity, and the authorities have been calling for the promotion of alternative sources of energy. Enditem
