In a ministerial statement released in parliament, Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry Margaret Mwanakatwe said the government is seeking for the funds from external partners to establish fully-fledged industrial clusters, adding that the establishment of industrial clusters is an expensive venture which government cannot undertake on its own.
“We are looking for additional money for the value chain clusters development programs to speed up the implementation of the projects. The program will contribute to poverty reduction and job creation in the country,” she said.
The minister, who expressed optimism that a suitable partner will soon be found for one pilot industrial cluster, said the program is also expected to supplement government’s efforts and accelerate development in the country.
The cost of funding the projects is driven by the need to set up significant infrastructure and other support services as well as the cost of buying modern equipment and skills training to operate the equipment, she added.
The government has come up with a program to establish industrial clusters in 42 districts and the program targets creation of various chains in fish farming, beef, tourism and groundnuts production. Enditem
