Yendi needs peace!

THERE is simmering tension in the Northern regional town of Yendi following reports that two people sustained gunshot wounds after a combined police-military team stormed the Abudu Royal Palace to prevent the spiritual head of the Abudu Royal gate, Bolin-Lana, from celebrating this year?s Damba festival. The Bolin-Lana is reported to have vowed to mark the festival despite protestations from the Andani gate and several warnings from the security agencies.

UNCONFIRMED reports indicate that some youth in the community massed up at the Abudu Royal Palace to prevent the gun-wielding military and police men from entering the palace, forcing the security team to fire warning shots. This situation is of great concern to Ghanaians as the adverse of these ethnic conflicts are numerous.

OUR brothers and sisters in the northern part of the country must know that nobody can grant them peace better than themselves. They need to shun politicians who will incite them to violence and those who fuel ethnic conflict to suit their parochial interests.

THE conflict has undeniably had a toll on the country as Ghana continuously spends its scarce resources on resolving the dispute. The cost of keeping peace in the region is more than the amount spent on bringing development to the area.

SO, we are appealing to the good people of the area to let peace prevail and see themselves as one people with a common destiny. Let us live to protect what we cherish.

YENDI should not suffer because of the interest of a few. Peace is what we need because that is the surest guarantee to development. Let peace prevail!
