A 19-YEAR-OLD boy met his untimely death in the early hours of last Saturday at a mining work site in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region after an excavator bucket crushed him.

The body of Kwaku Boadi was said to have been severely fractured as he was pierced, considering the impact of the crush which occurred around 4:30am at Yaw-Krakrom, a village near Bepotenten in the district.

Reports said he had been working in the area for the past three months as a labourer with Chinese illegal miners and their Ghanaian counterparts during night hours.

ASP Prince Odon-Kodua, Jacobu District Police Commander, who confirmed the tragic incident, told DAILY GUIDE that the remains of Kwaku had been deposited at the St. Peter?s Hospital mortuary.

According to the police chief, the excavator operator, Alfred Salami Kenny, 33, had been taken into police custody and was assisting with investigations.

He explained that the deceased and some other miners were on site on that Saturday night, prospecting for gold when the machine they were working with became faulty.

ASP Odon-Kodua said while the machine was being repaired, the deceased and two other colleagues took a nap.

The police commander narrated further that the excavator operator was also on site performing his duties when he was called away to assist other workers to push the equipment to its designated place after the repair works.

ASP Odon-Kodua disclosed that as the mine workers were working earnestly to get the machine pushed, the operator moved the bucket of the excavator which struck Kwaku Boadi in the process.

A source at the site told DAILY GUIDE that due to the force, the blades of the bucket ripped Boadi?s body and pinned him afterwards, but the police chief had a contrary statement.

He explained that the bucket hit Boadi on his chest whilst asleep on the ground, and when the operator lifted the bucket off him, he was already dead.

He added that the police summoned some of the workers, including the supervisor, and took statements from them as part of investigations.
