World Looks Keenly At The Nigerian Gov’ts Plwds Policies

GIFT EMMANUEL, Abuja

THE United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Programme (UNPD) Resident Representative, Daouda Toure has said that the world is looking up to Nigerian Government on her policies and issues bothering on the welfare of Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) in the country.

Toure stated this while playing host to the National Coordinating Chairman/CEO Federal Civil Service Staff With Disabilities Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Alhaji Iliasu Abdul-Rauf yesterday in Abuja.

He said UN/UNDP will factor the office of the PLWDS in its activities to ensure that all the needy in the country are given their rightful place.

According to him, ?we will be helping your office in terms of advocacy because this is very important on the agenda of the International government by reminding ourselves that the leadership of Nigeria is not only for this region but the entire African continent.

?Everybody looks forward to what is achieved in Nigeria because everybody will be looking forward to replicating it and Nigeria being the member of secret council of UN, it is critical that when people talk about situation in Nigeria it is for the best achievement that one can find in any region of the world.

?So there are very important areas which I believe we can work together with the federal government of Nigeria to better the lives of this group?.

He said a meeting has been scheduled which will be held in the next ten days so as to keep the momentum adding that ?as matter of fact; we are also meeting today with the chairman of the Federal Civil Service Staff With Disabilities Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Alhaji Iliasu Abdul-Rauf?.

He however added that UN support to Nigerian Government on this issue would be demand driven.

Earlier, Alhaji Iliasu Abdul-Rauf, the National Coordinating Chairman/CEO Federal Civil Service Staff With Disabilities Multipurpose Cooperative Society said the brief meeting with the UN Representative was a follow up to the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly which was held in the United States in September and October last year.

He said the yesterday?s meeting was a follow up to see the areas the parties can involve to uplift the lives of the Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) in Nigeria especially in the areas of health, skill acquisition and other supports.

?This meeting is like the starting point in Nigeria because after the general assembly last year which we actively participated, we have been finding time to meet with the UN representative in Nigeria to enable us tape the resources from UN which is our legal right to have and it will interest you that there is another meeting coming in February between 11th to 24th we were advised to be there too.

?The meeting is just to discuss how Nigerian government will abide with the UN convention on the issue of PLWDs and the aims of our office is to ensure that, there is no discrimination between PLWDs because we need to take care of this people.

?This issue of street begging is a big problem in Nigeria and we believe it is a disgrace to us with all the support coming to the country as well as our natural resources. So we are doing everything possible to ensure that street begging is eradicated in the country?.
