NLC President, Abdulwaheed Omar

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Abdulwaheed Omar Sunday said that he will lead the Labour Party governorship campaign in Anambra even as he called on workers in the state to learn from the gains of the Labour Party governments in both Edo and Ondo states.
The Labour Party (LP) also urged the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to stop flexing their muscles and return to the negotiating table.
Briefing journalists at the weekend shortly after its 16th National Executive Council (NEC), Comrade Omar said that workers in Anambra State have suffered under previous governments and wondered why they will toy with the opportunity to enthrone a Labour Party government in the state.
While endorsing the candidature of Ifeanyi Uba, the NLC leader said: “We have now resolved that we will not only go and cast our votes and fold our arms after sensitizing the workers and other Nigerians, but we will monitor the collation, the counting up to the declaration of the results. We will encourage every worker to ensure he or she will be part of the monitoring.
“Anambra is a very unique area particularly to workers because if you go and ask Anambra workers if they are fully enjoying their minimum wage, you will hear their answer; whether they are very comfortable in their various places of work, you will hear their answer. Not only workers, even market women and other people, therefore I think Anambra people are desperately looking for a change and a change for the better.”
He said that the Labour Party will campaign in Anambra State the way they did in Edo and Ondo States, “we will even do more, we will tell the sceptics that Labour is the party that Nigerians need if they want development as is been witnessed in Edo and Ondo States.”
Meanwhile, the Labour Party, which noted that the nation’s education sector is in comatose, also threatened to join the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to demonstrate if the Senate removed workers’ issue from the exclusive legislative list to concurrent list.
LP warned the National Assembly to be cautious on issues concerning Nigeria workers, adding that it is the workers that create the wealth the lawmakers were planning to give themselves life pension.
The National Chairman of the party, Dan Nwanyanwu said there was no need for federal government and ASUU to run away from the negotiating table.
On the outcome of the NEC meeting, Nwanyanwu said, “government should look passionately on the demands of ASUU. ASUU should also look at where it has to do some concessions so that our children will return to classrooms. There is no need flexing muscles, the truth is that education sector is in comatose, I am talking as a pro-chancellor of a state university.
“These things happened over the years and government must not sign agreement it does not intend to honour, that is the point ASUU is making. If you put your signature on a document, implement it. There is no reason why the federal government should not implement the agreement it made with ASUU.

?If it did not want to meet the agreement there was no reason for government to have signed it. This is why ASUU is suspecting the government that it just want to get them back to work and they will not honour the agreement. They should honour the agreements, return to the negotiating table and agree on those issues.”
