Members of the Woodworkers Association of Ghana [WAG] has taken a swipe against a recent statement made by the Member of Parliament for?Nadoli Kaleo, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin that Government will import furniture from China to fix the completed Job 600 edifice which is to accommodate Members of Parliament as offices.
UntitledMembers of the Association at Agona Swedru have condemned the move by the government, saying it has failed to live up to its promise of promoting and patronizing made in Ghana goods.
The C.E.O. of Joe and Sons Furniture and Casket Works Mr. Stephen Amoah, Mr. Richard Ekow Mensah of Adom Furniture Works,Mr. Kofi Nyamekye, Mr. Isaac Ketu and Mr. Daniel Mensah have all described the ?patronage of made in Ghana goods? campaign by the government as a lip service.
According to the members of the Association, furniture made in the country are of high quality than those imported from other European and Asian countries which they argued that are made of Chip Board from a mixture of saw dust with other chemical components and compressed into a board used in making furniture.
This product, according to the woodworkers, have short life span which get worn off with the least breakage as compared to that made in the country which is made of pure hard wood, and as such they do not see the insistence by the government to still import these furniture for use.
Readers would recall that barely two years ago, the government imported furniture for use by the Parliament House and this received a lot of criticism not only from woodworkers, but also by members of the general public who accused the government of preaching virtue and practicing vise.
