Mr William Ansah Kwakye, Asante-Akim Central District Director of the Department of Social Welfare, has asked women to become more assertive, and refuse to be mute on physical threats and assault by abusive husbands.wpid-black-woman-domestic-violence.jpg
He said they should be bold to report abuses they suffer from their husbands and family members, to the appropriate state institutions for protection.
The resignation and unhelpful attitude of keeping things to themselves are not good for the fight to stop gender violence.
It only tends to aid and provide the motivation for the offenders to continue to bully, assault, treat the weak and the vulnerable badly, without remorse.
Mr. Kwakye said until the victims, especially women accepted to break away from ?this culture of silence,? it would be extremely difficult to decisively deal with the problem.
He was contributing to discussions at a forum held at Tokwai-Asuboi, a farming community in the Asante-Akim South District, to mark the end of this year?s ?16 days of activism against gender violence.?
The day, which coincided with the Human Rights Day, has been set aside to raise awareness about gender-based violence as a human right issue at the local, regional, national and international level.
The forum was organized by ?The Hunger Project-Ghana (THP-G),? under the theme: ?From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World.?
Mr. Kwakye encouraged those who suffer abuse to defy threats by their abusers and family members, to seek protection of the law.
He said he found it deeply disturbing that a significant percentage of cases involving violence against women go unreported because of pressure on the victims by family and friends.
According to him, statistics show that one in every three women had suffered one form of abuse or the other, and said concerted efforts were needed to change the situation.
He reminded chiefs and community leaders that it was an offence to settle cases like defilement and rape at home.
Mr. Seth Anane Twum, District Project Officer of THP-G, said it was important for society to protect the rights of women, and help them to live their dreams.
