Why President Mills Can Not Fix The Energy Crisis?

Words are the most powerful tool used by mankind says Ruyard Kipling, which are explained by two great learned gentlemen first with Ernest Dimnet who says,” The history of the past interest us only so far as it illuminates the history of the present.

Then with Emile DeGirardin who says,” The power of words is so immense. A well-chosen word has often suffered to stop a flying army, to change defeat into victory and to save an empire”.

Quotations from these great men whoever lived should put everything I want to discuss with readers about the energy crisis to an end if they really understands what these great men wanted to mean.

But for the sake of those who will still need explanation why I quoted from these great men I will do justice to the issue fairly.

Not quite long ago, Joy F.M. posted a video recording of an investigation conducted by the ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, about serious corruption at ECG for all to see.

In the recording president Mills was seen speaking to ECG officials on one of his visits to their department and complaining bitterly to them,” dem odum na oso, odum na oso no eresaei ade won hwe na wonsiesie” to wit, the persistent power outages was causing great loss to lives and properties therefore it should be solved.

Surprisingly, he had previously questioned numerous Ghanaians who have been complaining about the power outage whether he was an electrician to solve the crisis as anytime power goes off which they scream ”Oh Atta Mills” as if he was an electrician who has been causing that problem.

Whether it was his niece or grandchild who corrected those who were blaming him for not solving the energy crisis, or it was his own adopted style to respond to the blames, the fact remains that Ghanaians are fed up with the persistent power outage and it is time the NDC government which he is the chief executive find a solution to it.

Much in disbelieve I placed my palm on my mouth after that news was reported in the media titled,”Is Atta Mills an electrician?” I needed no one to provide me with the answer as I asked myself was John Agyekum Kufuor also an electrician when the power outage was severe in 2007?”

Immediately this question came up in my mind I opened my laptop and zoomed straight to my sent folder to retrieve a report I got published in the Ghanaian Chronicle as their reporter when then candidate Mills paid a visit to the Akosombo Dam during power crisis in NPP administration and what he said.

It could be recalled that the year 2007 Ghana experienced severe power outage which the engineers blamed it on the dryness of the Akosombo dam due to draught up north of the country.

All kinds of accusations were leveled against the then sitting president, John Agyekum Kufuor and his NPP government for not doing anything to solve the problem.

To score political points at that time, Professor John Evans Atta Mills laced his campaign boot and quickly paid a visit to the Akosombo dam to tell Ghanaians that he was concerned more than then President Kufuor.

On that day April 27, 2007, president Mills observed that Ghanaians were very angry over the electricity load shedding because they were not being fed with the truth that they were in energy crisis.

He charged the management of Volta River Authority [VRA] to force government to accept whatever measures they have drawn to avert more problems that would occur since they occupied a very sensitive position in the country.

Professor Mills later said the NDC were prepared to assist the government to solve the problem by offering their advice, knowledge and experience adding the NDC had concluded the document on Bui Dam before leaving office and all that the NPP government at the time needed to do was to see to its immediate term solution to the crisis.

“My government would be the first government to go down to the people to tell them the truth that we are in energy crisis but are finding solution to it” he sounded too good to be leading a political party that was going to solve the crisis within a few months when voted into power as the president.

President Mills indeed managed to win majority of the Ghanaian votes to emerge the winner of the 2008 elections which brought him and the NDC party to power.

But for almost four years in office as the president what kind of response does he give when people still complain of the persistent power outages.

By the way, has the persistent power outage been solved totally, reduced or it still remains as bad as it was during president Kufuors time?

Or he throws his hands into the air anytime people complains to him about the worsening energy crisis and out of frustration gives a cheeky answer,” Is Atta Mills an electrician to solve the power crisis?”

Maybe after he assumed office as the president he realized that the energy could not be solved by just going to the people to say we are in crisis as he said Kufuor failed to do but rather a big one which will need time and conscious approach with huge sums of money to solve.

No but he assured Ghanaians that the NDC was ready to offer advice, knowledge and experience to the NPP government to solve the crisis.

So for the past four years that his party has been in power why can’t he assemble his experts to put those advice, knowledge and experience it was ready to offer the NPP to use in order to come out from this canker?

Really words are the most powerful drug used by mankind as said by Ruyard Kipling and manifested by what is currently going on in Ghana where because of the promise given to the people by president Atta Mills Ghanaians are holding on to his pants only for him to feel bad and fire salvos back at Ghanaians.

Let politicians know that no matter what they say they would be held accountable in future. He said he will solve the crisis when he comes to power. Therefore if Ghanaians demand an answer from him as the crisis keep on getting worse are they wrong?

Mr. President kindly fix the crisis or we will say you lied.

THE RECORDER NEXT WEEK WILL PLAY BACK WHAT PRESIDENT MILLS SAID ABOUT NUMEROUS TRAVELS HONOURED BY EX-PRESIDENT KUFUOR AND FIND OUT WHETHER HE STAYED AWAY FROM NUEMROUS TRAVELS WHILES IN POWER OR NOT.

UNTIL THE RECORDER STOPS PLAYING BACK, STAY TUNE.

End.
