Why Jonathan Is Silent Over Happenings In Akwa Ibom

Gov. Akpabio

Gov. Akpabio“The source noted that in the last two months, ?Chief Don Etiebet, a PDP chieftain and Mr. Umana, have written graphic and detailed petitions to the Inspector General of Police requesting for investigations into the various acts of violence in the state.? – This Day

The above quoted statement left nothing but a feeling of despair, foreboding and dismay as I read it. Why; you may ask. The simple answer is that it reminded me of the numerous petitions which numerous citizens of Akwa Ibom State had written to Security agencies and the presidency of the Nigerian federation about the numerous political murders in Akwa Ibom State. For reasons which only the government of Goodluck Jonathan can explain, the Federal government of Nigeria, headed by Goodluck Jonathan has either suppressed, disregarded or passed over as un-important, every single petition on the insecurity wrought in Akwa Ibom State under Godswill Obot Akpabio?s governance.

To the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the question – how much longer? – has been posed on several fronts because of the insecurity which has wracked the nation. There have been several cases of insecurity which could have been solved by the Chief Security Officer of the nation, President Goodluck Jonathan, if the President had remained focused, patriotic, honest and sincere to the generality of the Nigerian public.

But as things have turned out for this President, his chief interest, occasioned by his desire to repeat the presidency, has become his pre-occupation with the very corrupt base of the Nigerian polity. It is to the corrupt that the President has looked up to for his re-election. It is the corrupt that the President has succeeded in corrupting further. The recent spate of impeachments of mainly politicians in opposing political parties has not been lost on Nigerians. The recent clamping down on the travel movements of governors in opposing political parties are indications of corrupt rule. The recent use of the military, which unfortunately reported clampdown ONLY on opposing political opponents in places like Ekiti State , under the guise of preparing for a “free and fair” election, only indicate that the President had shot himself in the foot – he can intimidate, but he cannot and will not conquer through intimidation. If he doubts it, let President Goodluck Jonathan reflect on what Ibrahim Babangida did, on what Abacha did, and on what Obasonjo did; to those who opposed them and their tenure elongation. When crunch time came, all the above mentioned former rulers of Nigeria lost out on their plans to elongate their tenures or to make themselves presidents for life!

There is a fundamental principle which many of Nigeria’s politicians, including Goodluck Jonathan, take lightly. That principle is the sanctity of every human life. Many political murders have occurred in Nigeria. Many perpetrators of these political murders do not believe that they will pay for the blood which they have shed. The fundamental principle of the sanctity of human life will prevail against those who have shed blood for political reasons. It will prevail against those who are complicit in the crime of shedding human blood, whether by turning blind eyes and deaf ears to the blood crying to God for vengeance, or by inactivity to procure justice for the murdered and for the widows, widowers and orphans whom the killed left behind. There is one murder which occurred in Akwa Ibom state which is particularly galling , not that other murders are not; – the murder of Mrs. Udonwa who was murdered and her corpse desecrated, ONLY because her son sought to challenge Godswill Obot Akpabio for the governorship of Akwa Ibom State. If the Chief Security Officer of the Nigerian Federation, President Goodluck Jonathan, fails to solve any other murder in Akwa Ibom State, he MUST solve that particular murder, OR remain complicit in the blood of that innocent woman which was shed for political reasons.

For the governor of Akwa Ibom State, his participation in murders and murder plots have passed from mere suspicion to confirmation, even by the governor through his language; and by his once-upon-a-time-political friends, who knew and perhaps covered up the governor?s complicity in some of the political murders which have occurred in the State of Akwa Ibom. Hear Godswill Obot Akpabio: ?I am assuring the game changer and the president that those who want to take power through the backdoor will die?.
Akpabio has become less denying and less circumspect in talking about murders committed for political reasons in Akwa Ibom State. Though he has stopped just short of confessing his complicity in the planning and committal of murders, he is no longer hiding behind denials in letting his political opponents know that their lives are in danger if they oppose him, or oppose the people he favors for political appointments. He is more brazen by the day in threatening political opponents. One might be tempted into thinking that his threats are meant only to force his opponents to back off from opposing Godswill Obot Akpabio politically. In a state where more than two hundred political murders have occurred, the most recent being that of Albert Ukpanah, known to have opposed Godswill Obot Akpabio?s senatorial ambition, the threats can no longer be regarded as empty!!

Recently, once-close confidants to Godswill Obot Akpabio – men like Umana Okon Umana, former Secretary to the government, Assam Ekanem Assam, former Attorney General of the State, and many others including Albert Akpan, Akpabio?s former Commissioner of Finance – have alluded to the insecurity in the state; and have barely stopped pointing accusing fingers directly at Godswill Obot Akpabio, for the incessant political murders which have occurred in Akwa Ibom State. It is very interesting to note that these men were collectively silent over the numerous murders which occurred in the State, when they enjoyed the governor’s patronage and friendship. Some of the governor’s close confidants, like Assam Ekanem Assam and Nsima Ekere, had pointed accusing fingers at innocent citizens (who either criticized or differed politically with Godswill Obot Akpabio) as the perpetrators of mayhem and murders in the state, in an unjustified attempt to please their tin-god boss, Godswill Obot Akpabio. Today some like Assam Ekanem Assam and Umana Okon Umana are singing different tunes. Their finger-pointing at Godswill Obot Akpabio for the insecurity in Akwa Ibom State may be deemed political; but what about accusations leveled by well-meaning citizens against Mr. Akpabio for the numerous UNSOLVED murders in the State. AND why do these murders remain UNSOLVED? Could any powers, like the governor’s; or his power of friendship and/or support for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, be playing any role in non-solution of these crimes of murder in Akwa Ibom State? It is worth quoting the President’s wife on this count – “there is God-o-o-o”!!!

These political murders in Akwa Ibom State have been known to President Goodluck Jonathan. If his Security outfits had not briefed the President on the insecurity in Akwa Ibom State bordering on the loss of hundreds of lives, one can recall that Goodluck Jonathan, in a 2011 campaign speech in Uyo, had indicated that he did not want anyone to murder another human being so that he could win the election to become President. Question is why did he have to make such a statement in Uyo? Did the President make such a statement even in his home state, or at any place else? Why did Goodluck Jonathan make such a statement on Godswill Obot Akpabio’s turf, unless there was a compelling reason for the President to voice his sentiments? “There is God-o-o-o”!!!!

Many citizens who have alerted the Security Agencies of Nigeria and the President of the Republic, to the political murders in Akwa Ibom State have either been forced to flee Akwa Ibom State or are dead; yet the Presidency and the Security Agencies under his command remain reluctant to investigate the murders or even to comment on the numerous petitions written by traumatized citizens of the State. One is tempted to ask why the Chief Security Officer of the nation, President Goodluck Jonathan has chosen not to command the commencement of an investigation on any of the petitions against political murders in Akwa Ibom State.

It is no longer a secret that Godswill Obot Akpabio, with funds stolen from the State treasury, was a financer, if not the chief financer of Goodluck Jonathan?s campaign in 2011. It is no longer a secret that Godswill Obot Akpabio had become the chief snitcher to the President. It is no longer a secret that Godswill Obot Akpabio has informed on many prominent citizens to the President. It is no longer a secret that Goodluck Jonathan has marked out certain people as political enemies because of conversations the President has had with Godswill Obot Akpabio.

It is no longer a secret that some of the President?s political plays have been adopted from Godswill Obot Akpabio?s political play book. What is still a secret is how much the President believes Godswill Obot Akpabio will contribute politically to his re-election in 2015. What is not known to the duo is an open secret before God, particularly where the duo have collaborated against the innocent, as in the non-solving of political murders under Godswill Obot Akpabio; AND because President Jonathan controls all the Security forces in the nation and their investigating apparatuses.

Is the President afraid that his friend and financier, Godswill Obot Akpabio, may be caught up in murders if the murders are investigated? OR does the President already know that Godswill Obot Akpabio is involved in at least some of the political murders in Akwa Ibom? OR are the President and his government more concerned about re-election and power wielding than in saving the lives of innocent citizens whose only crime is their political opposition to Governor Godswill Obot Akpabio; OR in procuring justice for the victimized, the murdered, and the orphan? Certainly these men claim Christianity for their religion but their actions are far from being Christian. ” There is God-o-o-o”!!!!!

For how much longer will the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria allow innocent lives to be snuffed out in Akwa Ibom State so that he and his financier, Godswill Obot Akpabio, can continue to wield political power?
