A triumvirate government agency task force comprising the Military, Police and the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) is to be established to clamp down on activities of illegal chain-saw lumbering and smuggling in the Volta region.

Ms Helen Adjoa Ntoso, the Volta Regional Minister, who spoke during a tour of Hohoe and Jasikan districts, said environment degradation of alarming and that things needed to be done orderly.

?We want investors and businesses to come but this does not mean we throw out law and order, virtually throwing caution to the wind,? she said.
Ms Ntoso said lumbering needed to be done within the confines of laid down rules and regulations.

?We must rise up against illegal activities including the issuance of fraudulent permits and chain-saw lumbering, otherwise our forests will be wiped out without the majority of our people benefiting from it,? she said. GNA
