VRA donates books to 40 basic schools

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has donated 300 story books to 40 basic schools with library facilities within the catchment area of the Authority in the Eastern Region to enhance reading.

The books are a collection of tales of the legendary ?Kweku Ananse? written by Abyna-Ansah Adjei, a Ghanaian publisher.

The first batch of 60 books was presented to six basic schools in the Asuogyaman District namely Tortibo LA Primary, Bosco Presby Primary, Gyakiti Primary, Adjena United Primary, Adomi LA Primary and South-Senchi LA Primary.

The remaining 240 books would be presented to schools in Ada East, Yilo Krobo, Lower Manya Krobo, Upper Manya Krobo, North Tongu, South Tongu, Central Tongu and Shama District.

The Authority also donated 200 bags of cement to Kwahuman Senior High School in the Eastern Region for the construction of the girl?s sanitary facility, which collapsed at the peak of the raining season.

Mrs Abla Fiadjoe, Director at the General Services Department of VRA said the gesture was part of the company?s Corporate Social Responsibility to improve education in the area.

Mrs Fiadjoe said the Millennium Development Goals of the country has gone some mileage in its achievement, hence VRA?s commitment to support education in the communities it works.

She urged the teachers to supervise the students to develop interest in reading.

Mrs Fiadjoe noted that the Authority has been donating exercise books at the beginning of every school to motivate the students to stay in school and given scholarships to students to pursue secondary education.

Mr Fred Kotoka, Human Resource Manager at Ghana Education Service, Asuogyaman District thanked VRA for the gesture, saying the support would motivate students to develop interest in reading.

He promised to intensify supervision and monitoring to ensure that the teachers encourage students to read and improve upon their intellectual knowledge for national development.
