The Extract is the Chieftaincy Certificate, and to acquire it, one should be registered in the Chieftaincy Register often referred to as the gazette.

Dr Seidu Dannaa, the Minister of Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, gave the advice at a workshop for Queens from the Volta Region, in Ho, Thursday.

?For your name not to be on the register is a dangerous thing?, Dr Dannaa, warned.

The workshop organized by the Ministry, was under the theme; ?Unity in Diversity the Role of the Queen Mother in the Volta Region.?
Topics discussed were ?Provisions for Traditional Administration in Ghana,? ?Mediating in Community Conflicts? and ?Processes of Registration of Chiefs and Queens Mothers.?

Dr Dannaa explained that the ?Extract? bestowed official recognition on the Chief or Queen and entitled the holder to be admitted to the traditional Councils or the Regional or National Houses of Chiefs or to perform official duties on behalf of the State.

He explained that a Chief or Queen without the ?Exract? could have his or her authority questioned by the subjects.

Dr Dannaa said the Ministry has adopted a policy, which required every Regional House of Chiefs to have a desk to deal with issues concerning Queen Mothers.

He said it was important for Queen Mothers to know the basic understanding and dynamics of chieftaincy, to be able to contribute meaningfully in the Houses of Chiefs.

Togbega Gabusu VI, Paramount Chief of Gbi Traditional Area, who presided, said many Queens from the Volta Region were not registered in the Chieftaincy Register because of the notion in the region that the position of Queens did not warrant such recognition.

He however insisted that Queens in his Traditional Area were officially registered and urged other Queens from the Region, yet to be registered, to ?put pressure? on their Paramount Chiefs to get them registered in the Chieftaincy Register.

The fees for registering the various categories of Chiefs and Queens are; a Paramount Chief, GH?500.00, a Paramount Queen, GH?350.00, Divisional Chief, GH?200.00, Divisional Queen, GH?150.00, and GH?100.00 for other categories.

Meanwhile Queens from the Volta Region have been urged to bring their influences to bear on the settlement of disputes and conflicts, in the region, Mr Kodzo Kumah, Danku, Counsel for the Regional House of Chiefs has implored.

Speaking on the topic ?mediating in community conflicts,? Mr Danku said the Queens must demonstrate their capacities to exert positive influences on events in their traditional areas.

Alhaji Imoro Seidu, the Registrar, assured the Queens that ?no government for any reason? could abrogate the chieftaincy institution because it is entrenched in the 1992 Constitution.

?It will be politically suicidal? he said.

Alhaji Seidu was speaking on ?Provisions for Traditional Administration in Ghana.?
