Curators of the site are seeking to collect 120 million euros, and have so far collected 102 million euros, the foundation said on its website.

Foundation President Piotr M.A. Cywinski described the offer from the Vatican as a “very important signal.”

The statement also quoted Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin – the second-highest authority in the Vatican after Pope Francis – as saying that the “modest sum” was “an expression of full support for the project of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation.”

Some 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, died in the German extermination camp in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II.
