The formation of an Afghan unity government could allow a bilateral security agreement between Afghanistan and the United States to be signed within days, US Secretary of State John Kerry says.
On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Kerry praises Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah for the “joint act of statesmanship, for their leadership, for their willingness to put Afghanistan and the interests of the Afghan people ahead of their personal interests and party.”
The government offers “a huge opportunity for progress in Afghanistan,” including the signing of the security agreement “in a week or so,” Kerry says.
