UK NPP FLAYS NDC …Over Odododiodio brutalities

The United Kingdom Women’s Wing of the opposition NPP has angrily lashed at the Mills administration over the persistent attack and brutalities meted out by hired thugs of Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Odododiodio constituency in the Greater Accra Region to political opponents: with particular reference to the parliamentary candidate of the NPP for Ablekuma South, Madam Ursula Owusu and the spokesperson to Nana-Akufo Addo, Samuel Abu Jinapor.

The party wing made this in a statement signed by the NPP UK Women’s Organizer, Madam Veronica Alala Heming.

The party thus issued a 24-hour ultimatum for the acts of violence and thuggery to stop or take steps to protect their members.

The statement described the act as an affront on the participation of women in the politics of the country since it stands a greater chance of being a legacy to discourage women from actively engaging in politics.

The statement called on the police to institute a comprehensive investigation into the acts of violence which is slowly creeping into Ghana’s body-politic.

It argued that “attack on one woman is an attack on all women and.. we the women’s wing of UK NPP will seize the absolute platform to condemn the action of the NDC supporters, who decided to unleash severe beatings on Madam Ursula Owusu and Abu Jinapor instead of being civil and following the due process.”

The statement pointed out that Odododiodio constituency in the Greater Accra Region has made the headlines for all the wrong reasons in the ongoing biometric registration exercise with officials of the two leading political parties accusing each other of misconduct.

“We have monitored the disparage remarks made by aspiring candidate of the National Democratic Congress on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana programme, Thursday who vowed to resist any attempt by people he alleged were not resident in the Odododiodio electoral area to take part in the registration exercise and that he must be taken by his words.”

It said Mr. Vanderpuye alleged that people were being bused from Kasoa and its environs, given house numbers at the lorry stations and led to the various polling stations to register.

Continuing, the statement noted that he said he and his agents would not sit down for that criminality to continue, adding that they will prevent it with their blood if necessary.

It indicated that despite criticisms from Kweku Baako Jnr., who was also on the show and who advocated for the use of challenge forms, Mr. Vanderpuye insisted resisting such people from registering and sending them back to the places they came from was the way to go.

It  asserted that he claimed to have learnt lessons from the past in which challenge forms were used to raise protests against persons suspected to be ‘imposters’ but somehow the same people managed to get their names back onto the register.

The statement maintained that NDC at every opportunity seems to enjoy attacking women who don’t agree with its policies or want to pursue peaceful democratic values, which are a right to Madam Ursula Owusu and every woman in Ghana.

It said NDC‘s sadistic attitude towards women is a real threat to peace and stability in the country and that they could not fathom why President Mills has been very silent on attacks against women.

The statement recounted that Madam Ursula Owusu has been attacked on every occasion by senior members of the NDC. John Jinapor, spokesperson to Vice President John Mahama insulted and attacked her on Metro Television calling her a prostitute. “Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, an aide to the President and Director of operations at the castle authorized thugs and macho men to beat up this woman just because she simply asked Ghanaians and women in particular to go and register.”

It contended that “other serious physical attacks on women have taken place since Mills took over as NDC leader and eventually President of the Republic of Ghana.”

It lamented that “a Pregnant woman died in custody at the BNI cells and till date nobody has been charged for her murder, Gifty Lawson, a reporter and journalist was arrested ,beaten by state  agents and her camera smashed, Amina Mohamed was arrested over the Yutong bus saga and detained for days.”

The statement also recalled that at the NDC congress in Koforidua in 2005, “Madam Frances Essiam, then NDC women’s Organizer was beaten with horsewhips and had marks on her back, Zita Okai Koi a former minister of information was subjected to malicious abuse in the media during her party’s parliamentary primaries, even Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, a former first Lady was physically threatened not to set foot to campaign in the Central Region during a presidential primary,  Captain  George Nfojor, a member of parliament brutally held a pistol to the head of a 23 year old woman and forcibly had sex with her; he was not sanctioned or reprimanded.”

“President Mills is indeed very pleased with the actions of Nii Lante Vanderpuye and his army of thugs and thinks that these gestapo tactics will put fear into the population and help him win the elections in December.”

The statement noted that these tactics have been tried by other African leaders in other countries before Mills but did not succeed.

The party called on the African Union and ECOWAS to call president Mills to order, adding that “No one can subvert the will of the people and the day of reckoning will surely come.”
