Two suspected car snatchers, who embarked on a robbery operation at Afienya in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region, were apprehended by the police on Monday.

Kweku Akorsah, 23, a resident of Madina, Jerry Quainoo, 21, resident of North Kaneshie both in Accra were arrested in the course of the operation while their other accomplice was gunned down.

The third member of the gang, whose name was only given as Yao, was killed after they unlawfully entered the premises of a banker, whose Toyota Camry was robbed at gun point.

They fired shots attracted the attention of residents.

They subsequently called in the police.

A police patrol team, which arrived on the scene engaged the car snatchers in hot exchanges of fire before eventually reclaiming the Toyota Camry after the police had overpowered the robbers.

They robbers were arrested with Yao , who passed away later, after being hit by a bullet.

He was then driving the car away.

Police impounded a Mazda Demo taxi with registration number VR 4785-12, which the robbers drove in, before retrieving seven live cartridges, AK 47, bags containing their wares and tools such as pair of boots, jeans trousers, T-shirts, Polo shirts and boxer shorts, two car number plates, GR 4466-12, screw drivers, among others.

The body of Yao has since been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue in Accra, pending autopsy.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Maxwell Atingane, Tema Regional Police commander, told journalists in his office before being led to the scene by Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, on Monday at about 10pm, a banker with Unibank, Theophilus Quarshie, had returned from town with his wife when the robbers pounced on them.

He said ?the suspects who were already hiding in Quarshie?s house shot severally at his Toyota Camry car with registration number GE 333-12 and asked the occupants to surrender all their personal belongings including the car at gunpoint.?

According to the police chief, a passerby who heard the gunshots called the police who upon receiving the call immediately gave the robbers a hot chase.

DCOP Atingane explained that the robbers, upon seeing that the police were closing in on them, opened fire whivh the police returned which an equal fire one of which hit Yao who was the one driving.This brought the vehicle to a halt.

The Tema Regional Police Commander noted that Akorsah and Quainoo were immediately arrested.

Yao passed away upon arrival at the hospital, where he had been rushed by police for medical treatment.

Superintendent Kwesi Ofori, warned that, ?Dodowa District Police has intensified its patrol and any criminal who dares the area will face the wrath of the police.?
