Trouble Brew At Mpasaso Chief & Indegens Clash Over Royalties

There is the likelihood that the Chief of Mpasaso No. 2, in Ashanti, Nana Ampofo Twumasi, would be paying a whooping sum of GH?500,000.00 (Five hundred thousand Ghana cedis) to the people of Mpasaso No. 2 in the Ashanti Region.

The money in question is the proceeds accrued from public toilets and boreholes including royalties paid to him in the name of the town, which he failed to render accounts.

Speaking to the media, after taking them round, Mr. Joseph Amankwah, a former Assemblyman of the area said Nana Ampofo Twumasi was not development-oriented and had not, since he ascended the throne 28 years ago, initiated any development projects in the town, while Mpasaso needs development.

Mr. Amankwah, popularly known as Akintola, disclosed that, at the moment Mpasaso No.2 in the Ahafo-Ano-South District of Ashanti, has only one place of convenience with three others and four boreholes closed down due to non-maintenance and non-accountability from the Chief.

They also accused the Chief of stalling plans to reconstruct the palace which is in a deplorable condition. ?We are worried anytime there is a funeral in the town,? he added.

Akintola who is also a royal, said the community sometime ago raised funds including royalties to the tune of GH?250,000.00 (Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis) to the Chief to start putting up a befitting palace since the old one has totally collapsed. According to him, to their amazement, the funds were misappropriated by the Chief.

According to Akintola, what broke the camel?s back is that Nana Ampofo Twumasi sometimes used Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene?s name to raise funds including sheep and food items with the explanation that, he was going to use that to thank the Asantehene and the Queen Mother Nana Afua Kobi Serwaa Ampem for the School block put up by the Asanteman for Mpasaso.

Akintola lamented that during his tenure of office as the Assemblyman of the area the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ahafo-Ano-South Constituency, Hon. Kwaku Balado Manu, donated 100 bags of cement to the people of Mpasaso No. 2, but the Chief and his elders shared among themselves.

On his part the Abusuapanin of the Mpasaso No.2 royal family, Nana Yaw Manu, who spoke in motion said, anytime they ask the Chief to render accounts to the toilet?s, boreholes monies, royalties as well as proceeds from community harvest, the Chief tells them, the monies are with the Asantehene.

?All these monies could have been used to renovate the toilet?s, four boreholes that have all been closed down as well as the Asantehene School blocks that have become death traps? he stressed pointing out that anyone who dare challenge the Chief to render accounts would be arrested, locked up then send to jail.

The Abusuapanin lamented that, more than 8 years now that Nana Ampofo Twumasi, has not performing his duties as Chief, let alone celebrate Akwasidae, because he had destooled him (the Abusuapanin) and the Queen mother Nana Amoakowaah, and Mpasaso No.2 do not have a palace, where the stool property are supposed to be kept, while the Mausoleum is turned to refused dump.

According to Asante Custom, Queen mother is the one supposed to cook food in the palace during Akwasidae and other festivals for the Ancestors.

The royal family of Mpasaso No.2 has sworn the Oath (Ntamkese) of Otumfuo on the Chief, and the matter is pending before the occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

?We are appealing to the King of Ashanti, His Royal Highness Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to enquire the entire allegation leveled against the Chief?.

When contacted, Nana Ampofo Twumasi, he denied the allegations of misappropriation, let alone, ever receiving any royalties from timber for development projects in the town, and confirmed the matter is before the Asantehene.

According to him, he had rather expended funds from his own resources towards community-initiated projects, including construction of road from Mpasaso to Nyinahin and initiated the Tepa roads for easy movement of vehicles that convey food stuffs to Kumasi and beyond.
