Trader seeks divorce from runaway husband

A trader, Adizat Abubakar, on Friday, pleaded with an Agege Customary Court to dissolve her 13-year-old marriage to Umar, who allegedly abandoned her.

Adizat, 33, told the court that she was six months pregnant when her husband abandoned her and their four children in 1998, and that she had yet to set eyes on him since then.

The petitioner also alleged that Umar used to beat and treat her like a slave before she arrived home one day and found him gone.

?I came back from shop one day and found that he had packed his bags and baggage and left home to an unknown destination. The most painful thing is that I was six months pregnant when he left the house,? said the petty trader.

“During the period we lived together, he always beat me and treated me like a slave, yet I endured because of my children. He was never a loving husband; he always came home in the night; I don?t know the kind of job he does. I asked but he shunned me.?

In her pleas, Adizat also told the court that her husband had deceived her by hiring people to stand as his parents during their muslim wedding in 1999.

Adizat said she got to know about the deceit later when she was unable to trace him.

Even though Umar was yet to be found as the court was also unable to serve processes on him, Adizat insisted that she wanted an official separation from her husband.

?I pray the court to dissolve the union and grant me the custody of my children because he might resurface in the future and want to claim these children,?? she added.

Emmanuel Sokunle, the Court President, adjourned the case to October 2 for judgment.
