This citizen-centred transformation blue print encourages innovation-Sambo

Vice President, Namadi Sambo, said the present administration would continue to focus on reforms for tangible improvement in the lives of citizens.
Sambo said this in Abuja at the Bureau of Public Service Reform (BPSR) inaugural reform seminar series with the theme: “New Directions for Public Service Reforms??.
The reform seminar is in collaboration with the World Bank, the Department for International development (DFID) and Federal Public Administration Programme.
The vice president was represented by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF), Alhaji Burkar Aji.
Sambo said that the need to transform the nation for the benefit of the citizens was entrenched in the heart of the government?s transformation agenda.
“The need to constantly transform to find better ways of doing things for the benefit of our citizens lays in the heart of the government transformation agenda.
“This citizen-centred transformation blue print encourages innovation, entrepreneurship and the quest for excellence.??
Sambo said that efforts were being made to reduce the cost of governance and ensure that public service organisations deliver better services to the citizens.
“We are strengthening our capacity to coordinate reform efforts to support the delivery of our transformation agenda, which also includes updating the National Strategy for Public Service Reform.
“We are focused on ensuring that farmers get their fertilizers, our major roads are improved to world class standards, reviving our rail system and refurbishing our airports.??
He said that the seminar would bring out new ideals that would help to guide future reform efforts.
Earlier, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim said that the seminar became imperative because of the importance attached to good governance and service delivery.
Anyim was represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Research and Documentation, Ferdinand Agu.
Anyim said that the seminar would provide a platform for the exchange of ideas by all stakeholders for better service reform.
The Director-General, BPSR, Joe Abah, said that the development objective of the civil service administration reform was to transform the civil service into an efficient and effective institution.
Abah said that the institution must have the capacity to deliver government policies and programmes.
He said that the bureau was established as the lead reform agency in Nigeria.
He added that the primary objective of the seminar was to address topical issues and share experiences about what had and had not worked well within Nigeria?s public service and other countries.
According to the D-G, the seminar will also build a framework and network of collaboration for improved innovation in Nigeria public administration.
The Country Director for Nigeria, World Bank, Ms Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly said that only a well-functioning and efficient public service was capable of supporting the qualitative development of society.
She said that an efficient public service would promote economic growth and provide essential social service to support the needs of citizens.
According to her, the public sector needs to provide the enabling environment to attract private sector investors.
She said that modernisation of the public sector was important to better align government functions to the aspiration of citizens and improve service delivery.
Marie-Nelly added that government should ensure that the benefits of economic growth of the country were shared equally among citizens.
