Thieves broke into a car and stole personal documents belonging to Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo, his spokesman told Belga news agency Thursday, partially confirming media reports.

Di Rupo was in the gym on Monday when his laptop was stolen from his official car, Belgian newspaper group Sudpresse and Het Nieuwsblad daily reported. They said the computer contained sensitive information about the royal family and documents on Belgian internal politics.

But the premier’s spokesman denied that sensitive documents had gone missing. He said the stolen items were “primarily personal notes and some work documents; this is not about classified information or state secrets.”

Belgium is in the process of forming a new government, following elections in May. Four centre-right parties are engaged in coalition talks, amid hopes of avoiding a repeat of the 2010 elections, when the process of forming a government took a record 541 days.
