Elections , votingTo win an election, a candidate must beat his opponents soundly in order to emerge as the winner of that election.
Beating an opponent in an election means winning more votes from the electorates in order to widen the gab between them to be declared the winner.
How to win more votes? Aha that is where the problem is. That is where political strategists try to vilify their opponents, engage in politics of insults, character assassination, lies, and even sometimes physically assaulting other opponents.
What is common in Ghanaian politics during electioneering campaigns is the composition of campaign slogans to win the hearts of electorates to cast their votes for a particular candidate.
A case in point is what happened in 2007 when ex-president John Agyekum Kufuor, introduced the new cedi notes where a slogan was composed to educate the general public that there would be no change in value and that the value was going to be the same as compared to the old cedi.
Quickly, propagandist in the NDC party lurking around to find faults in then NPP government and use it to campaign against their opponent composed another slogan which was the opposite of the national currency re-denomination slogan.
Instead of singing the slogan “there would be no change in value the value would be the same” the NDC slogan said,” there is no change in suffering the suffering would be the same”.
Yes it was the Eastern Regional chairman of the NDC Mr. Julius Debrah who sounded like a renowned gospel musician composed that slogan when welcoming regional organizers and secretaries to a two day strategic workshop at Bunso on April 19, 2007.
In fact Mr. Julius Debrah, who is now vying for the Suhum parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NDC, won the heart of the national chairman Dr. Kwabena Adjei, Asiedu Nketia the national secretary and other party executives who were present which saw all of them singing that slogan as a campaign song against the NPP government.
So much charged with that slogan, the national chairman made it clear that a greater part of the public was seriously yearning for a change of government an elective change that could provide them with hope, opportunity, sustainable livelihood, dignity and honours human beings whom they believed could take place only through the ballot box.
The NDC national chairman reminded party members at that time who may be thinking of acquiring power and property over nights without working for it, that they were in a wrong camp and unpatriotic.
“We need to work together to bring the NDC to power before we can think of how the benefit of being in power will accrue to each and everyone of us and to the very people we have committed ourselves to serve” the tape recorder picked him as he advised party members.
At that time Dr. Kwabena Adjei told the party executives that the horrible economic, social and political situation under the NPP government should be their wake up call to serious and relentless campaign duty.
Here I play back the recorded speech of Dr.Kwabena Adjei. “The energy crisis, high cost of living, expensive inefficient and accessible health care ,high cost of education, housing, transportation and utility deliveries, the rising rates of unemployment, crime, ritual murders, drug trafficking and selective justice as well as the high incidence of official corruption and discrimination should prick your conscience” he stated.
Identifying what could be termed as suppose loopholes in the NPP government, the presidential candidate then, Professor J.E.A.Mills started his “I CARE FOR YOU” campaign and the subsequent “BETTER GHANA AGENDA” programme when he took office.
But the question many people are asking currently is has the president been able to walk the talk at all? From now onwards we are going to delve deep and find out.

NEXT WEEK, THE RECORDER WILL PLAY BACK ON ENERGY CRISIS DURING EX-PRESIDENT KUFUOR’S TIME AND WHAT ATTA MILLS SAID. HAS THE CRISIS BEEN SOLVED DURING PRESIDENT MILLS TIME? WHAT IS HE DOING ABOUT IT?
TILL THE RECORDER STOPS PLAYING BACK, STAY TUNE.
