The Amazing View of Mekadatu

The meaning of Mekadatu is ‘goat’s leap’ in the local language. It is located at a distance of about 98 Km from the city of Bangalore. You can do bus tickets reservation from Bangalore City and reach this place within couple of hours. If you start early in the morning you will be totally relaxed when you complete your journey.

On the Kanakpura Road you can see Cauvery Sangam, where the Cauvery River meets River Arkavathy. You will find the water levels are different at different .points of the river.

The Sangam is usually very crowded place like any other tourist location. You will find adults as well as children equally enjoying in the cool and refreshing waters of Sangam. You can also find plenty of shops around selling all kinds of eatables.

In order to reach Mekadatu you have to cross this river.

When the water level is low you can just walk through the stream, but during rainy season you need to hire a boat to cross the river.

From the Sangam, Mekadatu is just 4 km away. You can a hire a bus from Sangam to reach Mekadatu. It will take about 15 minutes to reach the place, as you need to travel on bumpy roads.

When you visit Mekadatu you will be petrified to see the fury of river. River Cauvery was probably flowing all over the place for many centuries. However, now many dams have been constructed and therefore, the water flow is regulated, but you can find good level of water during rainy season, if you ever happen to visit this place during monsoon.

The rocks present around the place have become smoother due to flow of water for many centuries now. The land has thus become hollow due to the force of the river.

You must be little careful while travelling or walking around.  The gorge is about 150 feet deep and therefore, when you walk on the edges, you should be very cautious. All the stones are very smooth, so you must be careful not to slip.

It is better to station yourself at any convenient place and look at the water flow.

You can also have the view of the gorge from the bus stand itself. The whole place is about 50 meters in length. It is surrounded by a flat land. Due to the flow of water all these years, the gorge is formed in the mountain.

You can find many crevasses, but it is quite deep. You can also visit the Chunchi falls, which is about ten kilometers from the Cauvery Sangam.

You can travel to Mekadatu from Bangalore after booking bus tickets either from the KSRTC counters or through the travel agencies. There are several tour operators, who arrange the transport facilities to Sangam. The bus reaches Sangam via Kanakpura Road. 

You can visit this place during any season of the year. Mekadatu is an ideal for a day’s trip. However, if you want to stay at this place then you can find few lodges and hotels around the place.
