A Tanzanian court on Thursday ordered the leader of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) to be returned to Uganda to face charges with murder offences. wpid-court-law.jpg
Cyprian Mkeha, a judge of the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam, gave the ruling after being satisfied that the charges against Jamil Mukulu, the leader of ADF, a Democratic Republic of the Congo-based Ugandan Islamic rebel group, were not related to political issues.
“The court satisfied that Mukulu will be tried with murder offences and not political nature,” ruled the magistrate, adding that there was sufficient evidence to establish prima-facie of the murder charges against the accused.
However, Mukulu said he was not satisfied with the ruling and told the court that he was intending to appeal at the High Court of Tanzania.
Mkeha ordered Mukulu to remain in remand prison waiting to be supplied with a copy of proceeding for appeal process.
On May 22, the government of Uganda through its Attorney General Shadrack Ruhindi, submitted the application for extradition, claiming that Mukulu was required in their country to answer murder charges.
Mukulu objected the application on the ground that he has no trust if he can be treated fairly by the courts of Uganda.
His followers Omary Abdallah Mutuka, Mohamed Matovu and Mark Abdallah Ssebaduka were also brought to the court to face extradition proceedings.
Mukulu is accused of commanding a spate of brutal attacks against civilians in both Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo since the late 1990s.
Mukulu allegedly founded the group in the 1990s with the aim of toppling the Ugandan government. Enditem
