The annual President Putter golf competition of the Tafo Golf Club held in the cozy and serene compact course in the heart of the Cocoa Research Institute Ghana [CRIG] at Akyem Tafo in the Eastern Region at the weekend received a good patronage, perhaps the best in recent times.

Friends of the club and others from far and near from Achimota, Celebrity, and the Royal Golf Club of Kumasi, added to the tall list which joined Tafo to celebrate the 60th birthday of the club’s president   Prince Kofi Amoabeng.

Indeed the day belonged to the president of the club whose charisma and hard work keeps transforming the young club into a potential hub for golfers who would wish to have very quiet weekends of golfing with business partners and friends. Traditional rulers like the overlord of the Akyem Abuakwa State, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Okyehene are now key members of the club.

Last Saturday’s two header event had to be crowned with a grand birthday frolic which had Ohemaa Mercy, the Ghanaian gospel songstress in attendance to provide melodious renditions with her group.

Dr. G. Thompson from the Royal Golf Club, Kumasi, and Achimota’s Bea Vetsch Bempong took the ultimate prize in the men’s and ladies 18-hole exciting events.

Dr Thompson, playing to handicap 12, compiled 79 gross or five under par 67 net to beat home boy Gyima Yahya by a stroke in an exciting finish with Eric Bonah 70 net,  George Amoah, ex-Ghanaian International football star turned golfer Tony Yeboah, Kwaku Okyere  and Akwasi Poku from the celebrity Golf Club all with 71 net apiece following.

Afriyie Nyarko took the 8th position with a 72 net score while John Adjei took the bobby prize with a huge 97net score.

Vetsch Bempong wrapped up the ladies encounter with a rather poor score of 78 net beating Achimota giants of Sussie Abaloo Kumassah 80 net, Clara Price 81 net, and Mona Myles Lamptey on count back.

The bobby prize went to C. Hammond 93net

Even though the occasion did not allow for speeches, the distinguished host and President Prince Kofi Amoabeng had cause to commend all present for honoring him with their presence while Ohemaa Mercy joined them in giving thanks to the Almighty.
