Heavy clashes erupted on Monday between Syrian government troops and Islamist rebels on Syrian side of the Golan Heights, near the border with Israel, a monitoring group said.

The fighting is raging in the town of Quneitra where Islamist insurgents last week seized Syria’s only border crossing with Israel, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Leading the rebels in the area is the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front that has claimed responsibility for seizing Fijian UN peacekeepers in the area on Thursday, according to the Britain-based watchdog.

Syrian troops and the rebels exchanged shellfire on Sunday, the Observatory said.

Syrian state television meanwhile reported that the army had started a wide-scale attack on “terrorists’ posts” in Quneitra, using an official reference to rebels fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

Al-Nusra Front said on Sunday it had seized the peacekeepers in retaliation for alleged “UN collusion” with the Syrian government.
