Syria: “Friends of Syria” meeting in Tunis. Kofi Annan appointed joint UN-Arab League envoy

ROME, Italy, February 24, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Ban Ki-Moon, the United Nations Secretary General, has appointed his predecessor, Kofi Annan, as international (UN-Arab League) Special Envoy to Syria. The UN comuniqué underscored that “The Special Envoy will provide good offices aimed atbringing an end to all violence and human rights violations, and promotinga peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis”

The Special Envoy “will be guided in this endeavour by the provisions of the General Assembly resolution A/RES/66/253 and the relevant resolutions of the League of Arab States. He will consult broadly and engage with all relevant interlocutors within and outside Syria in order to end the violence and the humanitarian crisis, and facilitate a peaceful Syrian-led and inclusive political solution that meets the democratic aspirations of the Syrian peoplethrough a comprehensive political dialogue between the Syrian government and the whole spectrum of the Syrian opposition”.

The Syrian crisis will be discussed today at the “Friends of Syria” meeting in Tunis, which Minister Giulio Terzi will be attending. “The use of force”, explained the Minister on the eve of the meeting, “is not a condition” vis-à-vis Syria, not least because “it would be opposed by members of the Security Council”. We need, rather, “to seek western and Arab unity on the Arab League project, which becomes ever more vital”.
