Reverend Eric Ankrah, IET, Ghana President, said the Government?s on-going 200 senior high schools construction projects should be allocated to 50 technical and 50 vocational institutions so as to support the economy.

He said the purpose of technical and vocational education was to provide practical skills needed to build, maintain, improve and sustain the national economic development.

Rev Ankrah made the appeal at the weekend in Accra during the IET, Ghana end of year conference and the Annual General Meeting for the year 2014.

It was on the theme: ?Competency-Based Training (CBT), Its Importance to the National Economy.”

Rev. Ankrah said Ghana?s adoption of the CBT system being pioneered by the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to enhance skills in TVET would provide flexible entry and exit points of training.

He said this flexibility should be based on established modules of skills training that were biased toward practical works, but which provided opportunities for further or higher education and training.

He observed that God?s plan and pattern for improving the life of mankind was through technical and vocational training in nation building.

Rev. Ankrah said as a result of enhancing the performance of professionals towards the national economy, the IET, Ghana affiliation with GACC had advanced a programme of study to bring its members to match up with international standards in project implementation, hence graduating 60 members into its College of Fellows as Engineering and Technology Consultants.

He said they had gone through 268 credit hours of professional training coupled with project works and professional practice dissertations.

He said the College of Fellows had attained very good professional standards and competence in the various areas of discipline and awarded the Certified Consulting Engineer/Technologist Certification and Post Graduate Diploma in Professional Engineering and Technology.

Alhaji Collins Dauda, Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, in a speech read on his behalf by Mr John Tettey, a Director at the Ministry, said the Ministry had been concerned with the increasing phenomenon of collapse buildings in the country.

He said the Ministry viewed the application of CBT in the curricula of vocational, technical as well as the engineering faculties of learning as a major step to eliminate shoddy works being done by some craftsmen and other charlatans in the building industry, which exposed all well-meaning citizens to the dangers of living in risk-prone structures.

He said it was putting in place the necessary measures for the takeoff of the Engineering Council to regulate engineering practice in the country and that the premises to house the Council was almost ready for commissioning.
