The programme was jointly put together by the Forestry Commission (FC), Trobenbos International Ghana, an NGO and the Forest Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG).

In attendance were members of community forest committees, farmer groups, chainsaw operators, representatives of the district assemblies, officers of the Forest Services Division (FSD), Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

Mr. Makon Parker, the National Coordinator, said everybody should be concerned about the disturbing degradation of the forest reserves and urged everyone to help stop the plundering.

He said it was important, particularly for people in the forest fringe communities, to show ownership of the reserves by working closely with the forest guards to check illegal tree-felling, farming, mining and other destructive activities.

They should also undertake massive reforestation to restore denuded forests, he added.

Among issues that came up for discussion were artisanal milling, integration of legal and legitimate markets into the voluntary partnership agreements, and overland export timber.
