SPS Poised To Correct Societal Ill Through Sport

The Society for Promotion of Sports (SPS) has said it plans to use sports as a tool to promote peace and empower young Nigerians.

Speaking in Abuja, the president of SPS, Vincent Michael said youth unemployment in the country has reached an alarming rate, stressing that the insecurity in the country could be traced to growing number o idle youths.

He said, ?in line with Global Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), we continuously conceptualize, develop and implement sports project for peace-building and community development as a beacon of hope for reintegration, in affirmation to the Magglingen conference of December 2005.

?Our objective is to promote sporting events and activities for peace building and community development. It is also to promote sports for wealth creation and economic empowerment for young people. To resuscitate the moribund and comatose school and grassroots sports development in partnership with National Sports Commission, through the instrumentality of massive grassroots sports programme.

He said the society is working with development partners and international donors to make the project a reality.

He said his team of reputable Nigerians who have served the country in various sporting capacity such Abu Gumel, Mary Onyali and a host of others have identified various prgrammes especially at the grassroots level that will promote peace.
