Spain: 1000s Abortion Opponents Protest

Thousands of abortion opponents demonstrated Sunday across Spain for a tightening of laws to prevent the procedures.Abortion

The protesters demanded that conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy keep his campaign promises and toss out a 2010 law passed by the previous Socialist government, which allows abortions up to the 14th week of pregnancy without restrictions.

“If they don’t do it, many voters will punish them,” Gador Joya – a spokeswoman for the group Right to Life, one of the organizers of the approximately 60 marches – said in Madrid.

The liberalization of Spain’s abortion laws provoked protests from conservatives and the Catholic Church. Rajoy’s government in December proposed a roll-back of the 2010 law. It sought to make abortion illegal in principle with exceptions in the case of rape or when the life of the mother is at risk.

The proposed law undermined public support for the ruling People’s Party and caused demonstrators to turn out to protest changes to the current law.

About 110,000 abortions are carried out every year in Spain.
