…do not sign a peace deal?

The South Sudanese government on Friday threatened to intensify the country’s eight-month civil conflict if the rebels do not sign a peace deal in Addis Ababa on Sunday.South Sudan

“The government is capable of moving to rebel positions and flushing them out,” Information Minister Michael Makuei said.

The meeting organized by the East African bloc Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) will discuss an agreement known as the cessation of hostilities matrix.

It foresees an end to fighting, the withdrawal of all troops and military equipment within 30 days, and a 10-kilometre buffer zone.

Several previous ceasefires have not been able to stop fighting between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and those of his former deputy Riek Machar.

The power struggle between the two men, which has a strong ethnic component, has killed tens of thousands and displaced more than a million people since mid-December.
