Soumaila Cisse named Mali opposition leader

The Union for the Republic and Democracy (URD) has officially chosen its president Soumaila Cisse as the leader of opposition in Mali, the party’s secretary general Madani Traore said on Tuesday.

According to the Malian law, “the opposition leader is chosen by the opposition party that obtained the highest number of members of parliament in the last legislative elections,” which in Mali’s case was URD.
“URD’s National Executive Council unanimously decided to choose Cisse to this position,” Traore said.
Cisse, 64, a computer engineer, was the opponent of candidate Ibrahim Boubacar Keita who is the current Malian president during the second round of presidential elections in July 2013.
Since 1993, he has held various ministerial positions, among them finance and trade. Between 2004 to 2011, Cisse served as the chairman of the West African Economic and Monetary Union, a grouping of eight countries. Enditem
