Police officer Ali Noor told Xinhua that Anwar Hajji Dayib, finance official at office of prime minister, was gunned down immediately after he left his residence in Mogadishu by armed men whose identity could not be ascertained.
“The gunmen sprayed Dayib with bullets, killing him instantly before they fled the scene,” said Noor.
A witness told Xinhua that the shooting appeared to be targeted as the men executed their plan with ease and left the place immediately.
Somali militant group Al-Shabaab has used similar means to kill government officials in the city before.
Early on the day, Al-Shabaab militants attacked a security training base near Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency headquarters, and four attackers were killed by government forces.
The attack comes a day after Al-Shabaab raided a police station in the outskirts of Mogadishu, killing 8 officers.
The government had also announced this past week it was beefing up security in the capital to avert any terrorist attacks during the holy month of Ramadan. Enditem
