The former Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Justice Emile Short, has stated that an independent anti-corruption agency should be established to deal with corruption cases in the country.

He noted that CHRAJ is not adequately equipped institutionally to combat corruption in a robust manner.

Justice Short made the appeal when he spoke on the topic, “The Quest for Governmental Accountability and Responsiveness in Ghana: A Shared Responsibility for Civil Society, The Private Sector and Government” at the 8th “Kronti ne Akwamu lectures organized by the Centre for Democratic Development in Accra.

He said even though there is an existing anti-corruption department at CHRAJ, it is unable to deal with corruption effectively.

“There is the need for a well-established and equipped independent body to be able to effectively deal with corruption”, he added.

Justice Short urged government to adopt and implement the national anti-corruption plan put forward by CHRAJ to help check corruption in the country.

He expressed worry that the current CHRAJ legislation does not have the power to arrest and prosecute people.

Justice Short said the new independent anti-corruption agency should be given the mandate to arrest and prosecute people.
He said the new agency must have three departments which include an investigation department, public education department and a prevention department, well-equipped to handle corruption cases effectively.

The Krontine Akwamu (Democracy and Governance Lecture) is one of CDD-Ghana’s flagship programs. The lecture features distinguished scholars and practitioners around the world whose work is focused on democracy-building and fostering good governance.

Such eminent personalities are provided with a forum to share their knowledge and insights into crucial matters pertaining to Africa/Ghanaian democratic governance with the public and to stimulate public debate on the same issues.

The lecture is aimed at bridging the gap between scholarship, pro-democracy and good governance advocacy.
