The Tolon District Assembly has constituted a Kayaye Committee to investigate the background and causes of the phenomenon (Kayaye) and come out with recommendations to stem it.

This formed part of measures to tackle child labour in the district since most of those engaged in the kayaye (carrying loads on the head) were children of school going age.

Mr Abukari Seidu, Tolon District Chief Executive, who announced this in a speech read on his behalf to mark the International Day against Child Labour at Tali in the Tolon District of the Northern Region, said most school girls in the district were resorting to kayaye at the expense of education.

It was organized by the Christian Children Fund of Canada (CCFC) in collaboration with the Northern Regional Department of Children, United Nations International Children Emergency Fund, World Vision Ghana, ActionAid Ghana amongst other non-governmental organizations.

Mr Seidu said the situation was alarming hence the decision to constitute the committee to come out with a lasting solution to save the future of girls who dropped out of school to engage in kayaye.

Apart from the kayaye phenomenon, children of school going age are also engaged in agricultural activities, which are the mainstay of the people of the district.

Mr Seidu said ?the Business Advisory Center under the Rural Enterprises Project in the district is also tasked to train and give employable skills to especially girls of school going age who for one reason or the other dropped out of school? to enable them to make a decent living.

He assured of the assembly?s readiness to play a facilitating role and create the enabling environment for meaningful development.

Mr Iddrisu Sunday, Northern Regional Director of the Department of Children urged parents not to engage their children in activities that undermined their overall well-being since that affected their education.

There were drama performances to educate the public on the need to stop child labour activities and promote the education of children. GNA
