The Public Health Co-ordinator of Global Media Foundation, Miss. Thereesa Ayitey has noted that reproductive health problems remain the leading cause of ill health and death for women of childbearing age in the world.

According to her, impoverish women, especially those living in developing countries suffer disproportionately from unintended pregnancies, maternal death and disability, sexually transmitted infections including HIV, gender-based violence and other problems related to their reproductive system and sexual behavior.

Miss. Ayitey said these when she was addressing schoolchildren of Nyamaa and St Patrick Junior High Schools in Sunyani. The event was organised by Global Media Foundation under its project ?Promotion of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights among young people in the Brong Ahafo Region?.

The project seeks to increase the knowledge of the adolescents in the Brong Ahafo Region on sexual and reproductive health and rights issues. Miss. Ayitey said providing young people and persons in fertility age with information on reproductive health are paramount in order to reduce teenage pregnancy among young people.

She observed that many parents lack the courage to educate their children on sex, therefore giving freedom to their children to learn from their peers. This, she noted, has led to the ever increase of illegal abortion among the youth especially schoolchildren. She therefore called on parents to educate their children on sexual and reproductive health issues.

The Headmistress of Nyamaa Junior High School, Madam Cathrine commended Global Media Foundation for the forum, saying it will help provide more information on sexual and reproductive health issues. She urged the student to abstain from premarital sex and concentrate on their books adding that their future is in jeopardy if they indulge in premarital sex. ?The Project Officer, Miss Winifred Nana Ayensu stressed the need for the student to take good care of their reproductive organs to avoid contracting sexually transmitted diseases such gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV/AIDS, candidacies.
