90-year-old Kumasi Central Market, regarded as the biggest in West Africa, is set to go down next month as government through the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) secures funding to build a new one.

The market which has experienced several fire outbreaks due to outmoded cables and illegal connections will have modern facilities like clinic, police post, fire service and educational facilities when completed.

KMA Chief Executive, Kojo Bonsu has allayed fears by traders they will be denied a space to do business once a new market is built.

Mr Bonsu said there will be fairness in the distribution of stores once construction works are done.

The reconstruction project will be financed by a grant?from the Brazilian government.

Parliament has already approved the?$298?million for the commencement of the project, according to Mr Bonsu.
