Rapist pastor remanded

The Agona Swedru Circuit Court has remanded in prison custody Pastor Joseph Bondzie,34, who reportedly raped a 22-year-old lady at Swedru.

In a failed bid to seek bail for Bondzie, Mr Alex Graham, a Swedru-based legal practitioner, argued that the prosecution could not establish the alleged concoction that made the victim fall into a deep sleep.

Moreover, he said the concoction could rather be anointing oil that dripped down from the victim?s head into her genitals and not sperms.

That argument notwithstanding, the court did not take Bondzie?s plea on the rape charge. Mr Justice N. K. E. Osae, a High Court Judge, sitting as an additional Circuit Court judge, therefore, adjourned the case to September 26, 2013, pending a directive from the Attorney-General?s Department in Cape Coast.

The facts of the case presented by Chief Inspector Ivy Agadia are that She said Bondzie paid a visit to the victim?s aunt one day and on seeing the victim in the house, he told her that it had been revealed to him that an evil spirit was dwelling in her.

According to the prosecutor, Bondzie then told the victim that he could exorcise the demon from her if only she would allow him, to which she consented. The prosecutor said at about 7:30 a.m. on August 27, 2013, Bondzie went to the victim?s house to pray for her.

Ms Agadia said when Bondzie got to the victims?s house, he met her auntie and asked of the victim and the auntie called her from her room.

The pastor told the victim to lead him into her room, since he didn?t want anyone to hear their discussion.

Chief Inspector Agadia said on entering the room the pastor asked her to hold his waist whilst he put his hand on her head to pray for her. During the prayer he told her to open her mouth for him to blow air in to cast out the demon.

The prosecutor said Bondzie blew some concoction on the victim and she fell asleep, only to wake up some minutes later to see semen in her genitals, with the pastor nowhere in the room.

According to Ms Agadia, the victim went to ask her auntie whether she saw Bondzie leaving and her auntie demanded to know why she posed that question.

The victim dipped her fingers into her genitals and brought out semen to show what the pastor had done to her.

The prosecutor said a report was made to the police but the pastor later went to the victim?s house to render an apology and he was arrested there.

He admitted the offence in his caution statement in the presence of an independent witness. (GNA)
