The President, John Dramani Mahama has travelled to the Nigerian capital, Abuja to meet his counterpart Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, a press release from the Ministry of Information and Media Relations has said.

According to the release, the President will discuss a number of issues including the West African Gas Pipeline and the fight against piracy on the West African coast.

In August 2012 the West African Gas Pipeline Company announced a shutdown of the system due to loss of pressure.

The operator of the West African Gas Pipeline announced August 28, 2012 in a press release issued and copied to ghanabusinessnews.com that it has shut down the pipeline system ?after experiencing a loss of pressure around the Lome segment of the pipeline this morning,? it said.

As a result, the company says it has stopped all gas deliveries to its onshore stations.

This has affected Ghana, resulting in shortage of electricity as the country?s thermal plants that are fired by gas have to be shut down.

The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) reported January 16, 2013 that piracy is highest in West and East Africa. The organisation reported that there were 297 pirate attacks on ships around the world during 2012, despite piracy reaching a five-year low, and the West and East Africa coasts were the world?s worst hit areas with 150 attacks on ships recorded in 2012.

According to the IMB, worldwide figures were brought down by a huge reduction in Somali piracy, though East and West Africa remain the worst hit areas.

Globally, 174 ships were boarded by pirates last year, while 28 were hijacked and 28 were fired upon, according to the report.
