President John Dramani Mahama on Friday donated 30 bags of rice, four boxes of cooking oil and an unspecified amount of money towards the upkeep of lepers in the country during the yuletide. He has also promised to examine their request to have tractors, an ambulance and the adjustment of their daily feeding stipend of GH? 0.80p per person per day to GH?5.00.

Mr Mike Obuobi, Special Advisor to President Mahama who presented the items to Rev Fr Andrew Campbell, Chairman of the Leprosy Aid Committee, on behalf of President Mahama, said those items were meant to fete the members during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

He said President Mahama, who was currently on holidays in South Africa on his return would collaborate with the committee to find solutions to some of the requests they made during their visit to him at the Castle on December 21.

Rev Fr Campbell, who received the items on behalf of the Committee, expressed surprise at the swift manner in which President Mahama had responded to their request and hoped that government would also attend to other demands they made.

?During our visit on December 21, President Mahama did promise us a Christmas package, but am rather surprised it has come so soon.?

Fr Campbell said the vision of the Committee was to make the cured lepers self-reliant and that is why they were making a request for tractors that would enable them to engage in farming.

?We are grateful to President Mahama and the entire government and we hope that this collaboration will continue to make the lives of our members better,? Fr Campbell concluded.
