President Goodluck Jonathan has urged universities in the country to suggest ways of resolving the nation?s contemporary challenges, including security.

Jonathan gave the charge on Saturday at the 26th?convocation ceremony of the University of Jos in Jos.

The President, who was represented by the Minister of Education, Prof Ruquayyatu Rufai, urged universities to align with the administration?s national goal.

“Universities must brace up to the challenges and must be creative in proffering solutions to contemporary challenges?including insecurity problems in some parts of the country,?? he said.

He congratulated the management of Unijos for a successful academic year.

?“ The University of Jos is on the path of growth as it is rated amongst the 10?best universities in the country.

`This is an attestation of your achievements in spite of security challenges in your environment of operation. The work of your Centre for Conflict Management is essential for our search for peace.

?It has made some impact in quest for a peaceful coexistence of all Nigerian citizens. As part of?your efforts towards peace, you organised a sports competition for tertiary institutions in the Plateau and I urge other institutions to emulate this good example.?

The visitor congratulated graduands and the distinguished personalities who were awarded honorary doctorate degrees.

The president said ?for accepting this recognition; you have been given added responsibilities in the service of our fatherland.?

Chief Rufus Adeyemo, Unijos Chancellor, appealed to the Federal Government to increase the grant of the institution in view of the enormous security challenges facing it.

“I similarly want all and sundry to imbibe the culture of peaceful coexistence and pursuit of meaningful development,?? he said.

Prof Hayward Mafuyai, the Vice Chancellor, appealed for a special security provision to protect lives and property of students and staff.

?“The ?challenge of security had continued to add more burden on our already dwindling internally generated revenue as a result of operating environment,? he said.

The Vice Chancellor also called on the Federal Government to constitute the Governing Council of the University, saying that such would impact positively on the university?s development and allay the continuous concern of members of the university.

He said?the university had made landmark achievements in the academic year, adding that one of the major achievements was that it became an ICT-driven institution.

“Already, this drive has yielded many positive results as the directorate of the university had recently emerged as the best SISCO Instructor Training Centre among other ICT-related achievements,?? he said.

The vice chancellor said that the university?s law faculty emerged the best among universities in northern Nigeria, and the third best nationally according to the Nigerian Institute of Advance Legal Studies? ranking in the period under review.

“The pharmacy programme of the university had been adjudged the best in the country by the National Universities Commission accreditation team and the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria,? he added.
