Postal Commission Chases Unlicensed Courier Service operators

The Postal and Courier Service Regulatory Commission (PCSRC) in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service is to arrest and prosecute all illegal courier operators in the country, especially those using motor bikes to deliver foods and parcels.

??To help the Commission to flush out these illegal operators, we are engaging the Police service to help us on how best they can contribute to our course,?? said Mr Isaac Annan Riverson, the Executive Secretary to the Commission.

According to him, they will deal severely with all unlicensed courier service operators saying : ??We have presented all the modalities to the Police and we will start the operation soon??.

The Daily Express gathered that the Commission has identified a lot of food delivery service operators who are not licensed.

The Commission intends to start the operations within the Accra Metropolis and later move to other regional and district capitals across the country.

Mr Riverson said because his outfit is the agency charged to monitor and regulate all the activities under the postal and courier sector, they have positioned themselves to bring all the operators under the commission. ??We will regulate all of these agencies to deliver effective services to the public,?? he added.

He told the Daily Express that because some of these courier services have not register with the Commission, a lot of the clients find it unsafe when contracting these operators for services.

Mr Riverson explained that apart from targeting the illegal motor bikes suspected to be doing courier activities, the Commission has noticed that a large number of illegal operations at car terminals .

He stated that apart from a few transport terminals that operate courier services and have been identified by the Commission, there are almost about 75% of the car terminals not licensed to operate courier activities. ??Almost all the major car terminals in Ghana operates courier services,?? he added.

??We have also realized that these illegal operators are rather competing and taking over the business from the licensed operators. Those registered under the commission are complaining and we want to stop that from happening,?? he told Daily Express.

??They are taking away businesses from the genuine registered firms who are paying taxes to the nation. We are sounding a strong warning to both unlicensed operators and those operators who have not renew their licenses with the commission to act accordingly,?? he said.

The Commission which is currently sensitizing the public and the operators across the country is also expected to develop special stickers for all the licensed postal and courier operators in the country. This is to help identify those who are legally registered and those not registered.
