Mr Portuphy, who was in white shirt with NDC colours, arrived at the old headquarters of the NDC around 1035 hours to submit his application form and a cheque for GH?5,000 to officials of the party in Accra.

Mr Portuphy?s arrival at the head office was also heralded by heavy brass band music, motorbike display and singing by his teaming supporters.

He was joined by NDC party bigwigs including Mrs Faustina Nelson, former member of the Council of State, Mr Harry Zakour, Mr Anthony Gyampo, Kamel Noshie and Mr Kofi Adams who are also vying for other executive positions within the party.

Mr Portuphy, speaking to the media after filing his nomination, said he was committed to the grassroots of the party and was prepared to serve the people in a humble, honest and dedicated manner.

He urged the rank and file of the party to remain peaceful and committed to the cause of the NDC adding that there should be no violence and antagonism.

He said vying for positions should remind Ghanaians that the NDC was a democratic party and after the Kumasi congress would forge ahead to victory in 2016.

Mr Portuphy denied claims that he was being backed by a team within the party saying the people were attracted by his message and they decided to support him.

He said the NDC as a social democratic party, needed to grow, develop and stand by the people who continued to vote for it.

He said under his leadership he would operate an open-door policy and work with the rest of the executives as a team.

Earlier, the campaign team of Alhaji Hudu Yahaya, one of the contestants of the NDC National Chairmanship position, submitted his application form to party officials.

Dr Francis Dakura, Communication Director for Alhaji Hudu Yahaya Campaign Team, said their candidate believed that the NDC party needed a spiritual renewal and direction based on its principles and what it stood for.

He said Alhaji Hudu Yahaya believed that the NDC had to be repositioned to take its rightful place as the party which appealed to the mass of the people.

Mr Kofi Adams and Mr Prince Kassim, who are vying for National Organiser and National Youth Organiser positions respectively, have duly filed their nominations.

Other members who are also competing for various national positions are expected to file their nominations by the close of the day.
