Pope Benedict XVI has entered history as the first head of the Roman Catholic Church to join the Twitter microblogging website.

The highlights from the Pope’s speeches over the coming 40 days of Lent will appear on his Twitter feed every day, cropped to the required 140 characters or under, Vatican Radio says.

The papal Tweets will be available in English, Spanish, Italian, French and German. The pontiff has already posted his first message: “Let us be concerned for each other, to stir a response in love and good works.”

Aimed at attracting youth to papal sermons, the project will continue sharing the Pope’s speeches and other important news after Lent, the head of the Vatican’s social communications office Claudio Maria Celli told Vatican Radio.

The Pontifical Council for Social Communications aims to get more tech-savvy in order to communicate with millions of Catholics around the world. Last summer, the Vatican launched its official website, adding to its own Osservatore Romano TV channel, radio and newspaper.

The Pope says he believes it is absolutely necessary to use all possible channels to deliver “profound thoughts” to believers.
