Following recent spate of burning and cutting down of glass fibre made streetlight poles and stealing of light bulbs along the Tema-motorway and N1 highway, the IGP, Mr Mohammed Alhassan has deployed the Ghana Police Service to mount a 24 hour patrol of the two busy highways of the capital, Accra.

Sources close to the Inspector General of Police disclosed to The aL-hAJJ, the decision was taken after a team of police personnel led by the IGP toured the Motorway and N1 Highway over the weekend.

The source said Mr Alhassan has tasked a team of police patrol to take charge of the two busy expressways day and night, saying ?while a team has been tasked to patrol the Tetteh Quarshie roundabout to the Tema end of the motorway and vice versa, others will move to and from Tetteh Quarshie roundabout to Mallam junction.?
Last week, The Ghanaian Times reported how 163 streetlight poles were destroyed on the motorway out of which 98 were cut with hacksaw at the base while 65 were burnt at the base with lorry tyres. Fifteen of those not affected were said to be without bulbs.

The stretches of grass between the carriageways have also been burnt. Many Ghanaians have linked the awful activities to sabotage of the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress government.

This prompted the President, John Mahama to make a whistle stop on the Tema motorway while returning from a visit to the burnt Central Medical Store scene in Tema.
The Ghana Police Service started intensive patrol of the motorway some few years ago following reported cases of armed robbery and other nefarious activities.

The IGP, Mr Mohamed Alhassan Mohamed has since assuming office introduced many new innovations to the Ghana Police Service including the increase in police visibility around the country especially, at intersections to curb some of these disturbing activities.
