The Accra Circuit Court yesterday remanded in prison custody a 28-year-old policeman, Benjamin Terkutey, who is alleged to have robbed an official of the Chinese Embassy in Accra.

Terkutey pleaded not guilty to the charge of robbery and was remanded by the presiding judge, Mr Francis Obiri, to reappear on September 2, 2013.

The prosecutor, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Patrick Morkeh, told the court that on August 4, 2013, Terkutey and one Patrick Kobby (now at large) did rob Xiangmei Shen of the Chinese Embassy of his two mobile phones, valued at GH?500, and one Samsung tablet, valued at GH?1,000.

He said the complainant was driving a Nissan pick-up, with registration number CD 2665 X, from the Spintex Road with two other Chinese to the Chinese Embassy when the incident occurred.

He said when the Chinese officials reached the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, two men, including the accused, who were dressed in police uniforms and armed with AK 47 rifles snatched the car from them after robbing them of their valuables.

The victims subsequently lodged a complaint at the CID Headquarters and the police commenced investigations.

He said in his haste to avoid being seen, Terkutey left his personal mobile phone in the vehicle and abandoned it at the Osu Post Office.

The prosecutor said the Osu District Police Commander, who was on a night patrol duty, spotted the Nissan pick-up parked opposite the Osu Post Office and sent it to the station.

He said investigations conducted revealed that the mobile phone left in the car belonged to Terkutey, who had then returned to his station in Tema.

The prosecution said Terkutey was apprehended at his duty post at the Kakito Police Station in Tema on August 13, 2013.

During interrogation, Terkutey admitted the offence and mentioned Kobby as his accomplice.
